John Brookes (1933-2018) designed gardens all around the world, among them the College Green Garden at Westminster Abbey, the English Walled Garden at the Chicago Botanic Garden, the Barakura English Garden in Tateshina, Japan, the Zespol Palace Park in Kikole, Poland, and many gardens in Russia, the Middle East, and all over Europe and North and South America. He also taught garden design all over the world, and in 1980 he founded the Clock House School of Garden Design at Denmans, West Sussex.

John Brookes was awarded an MBE for garden design and services to horticulture, the Award of Distinction of the American Association of Professional Landscape Designers, the Garden Writers’ Association of America Award of Excellence, and countless other international awards, including four Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medals. He lived at Denmans in West Sussex.

Jonathan Buckley specializes in garden and plant photography. He has illustrated many books, including, most recently, Sarah Raven’s Wild Flowers and My Secret Garden by Alan Titchmarsh, and he is widely published in newspapers and magazines including The Guardian, the Daily Telegraph, The Garden, Gardens Illustrated and Horticulture.

George Carter began his career by designing exhibitions for museums and art galleries. After working for London’s Geffrye Museum and for the Sainsbury Centre at the University of East Anglia, he turned his attention to gardens and soon attracted a variety of clients the world over, with gardens great and small.

He has designed gardens in France and Spain, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maine, as well as all over Britain, and has won eight Chelsea Gold Medals. Previous books include Garden Space (Mitchell Beazley, 2005); Garden Magic (Double-Barrelled Books, 2015). He lives in Norfolk.

Carol Casselden is an award-winning photographer of gardens and plants. She lived at Sandhurst in Kent, close to Great Dixter, until a recent move to Edinburgh.

Military historian Dr. Hugh Cecil's books included The Flower of Battle: How Britain Wrote the Great War (Steerforth, 1996).

Together Hugh and Mirabel Cecil wrote Clever Hearts: a Life of Desmond and Molly MacCarthy (Gollancz, 1990), which won both the Duff Cooper Prize and the Marsh Biography Award, Imperial Marriage (History Press, 2005) and In Search of Rex Whistler: His Life and His Work (Frances Lincoln, 2012). Their two-volume work about Rex Whistler, Inspirations, was published by Pimpernel Press in April 2015. Hugh Cecil died in 2020.

Mirabel Cecil is author of A Kind of Prospero (Walker, 1996) and, with David Mlinaric, Mlinaric On Decorating (Frances Lincoln, 2008).

Beth Chatto (1923-2018) was the most influential British plantswoman of the past hundred years. She was the inspiration behind the ‘right plant, right place’ ethos that lies at the heart of modern gardening. She also wrote some of the best-loved gardening books of the twentieth century, among them The Dry Garden, The Damp Garden, and Beth Chatto’s Gravel Garden. She was created OBE in 2002 and also held the Royal Horticultural Society’s Victoria Medal of Honour.

Val Corbett is a freelance photographer based in the Lowther Valley on the eastern fringe of the Lake District. She is well known for her landscape photography which features in books such as Winter in the Lake District, A Year in the Life of the Eden Valley and Rainy Days in the Lake District. Her garden photography regularly appears in Country Life. as well as in the award winning book Gardens of the Lake District. Her most recent book Arts and Crafts Houses of the Lake District demonstrates her skill in photographing interiors.

Jane Cumberbatch is a designer, stylist and writer, and the originator of the philosophy 'Pure Style', which emphasizes simplicity, thrift and longevity. She has worked as decorating editor for House and Garden magazine, as well as for Elle Decoration and the Sunday Telegraph magazine.  She is the author of many books, including Pure Style (Rylands, Peters and Small, 1996), Pure Colour (Pavilion, 2015) and the cookbook Pure Style: Recipes for Every Day (Pavilion, 2011). Her south London home is frequently used for location shoots for magazines and television.
